Tyres – What does the law say?
The law states:
“The grooves of the tread pattern shall be of a depth of at least 1.6mm throughout a continuous band compromising the central 75% of the breadth of tread and round the entire outer circumference of the tyre.”
The current penalty for illegal tyre tread depth is a maximum fine of £2,500, with discretionary disqualification and a compulsory driving licence endorsement of 3 penalty points per illegal tyre. Here at West Way, we recommend changing your tyres at 3mm or less, as the performance of tyres decrease rapidly as tread depth decreases towards the legal limit.
A new tyre will have 8mm of tread depth, give you 6.4mm of useable tread before the tyre becomes below the legal limit.
Budget vs Premium
If you’re looking to treat your car to new tyres on a budget, then you’re in the right place. At West Way Altrincham we offer tyres from just £29 in our budget range. However, a budget tyre may not be the best – or safest – option for everyone.
Which tyre is for you?
All tyres now come with an environmental label. This will show the tyre’s rating in terms of noise, breaking in wet conditions and fuel consumption, allowing you to make an informed choice on what tyre is best for you. Before deciding the quality of tyre which you want to purchase, you may want to consider the following:
- How much motorway driving do you do? A premium tyre may be useful as they provide an improved grip at higher speed braking.
- Do you live in a rural area? A premium tyre will provide a better braking performance on wet and slippery roads.
